TWO-TIMES PIRATE VICTORIES

Back-to Back Victories for ECU's Ice Pirates

01/27/08

GRIFTON, NC - American Collegiate Hockey Association Div III ECU Pirates hosted a pair of games this past weekend against Virginia's Liberty University Div II, team emerging victorious in both. In Friday night's 7-3 victory, the Pirates showed considerable mettle against a larger, more physical team. ECU Sophomore Chris Cesario netted 4 goals, with Junior Jeremy Lang, and Freshmen Nick Dinardo and Zach Johnston scoring one each. Freshman goaltender, Matt Dalgetty allowed 3 goals on 36 shots, holding Liberty scoreless until midway in the 3rd period. In the hard-hitting action, ECU was penalized 22 minutes. Liberty, apparently unable to adjust its game to a smaller ice surface, seemed frustrated and exhibited careless physicality, amassing 59 penalty minutes. Liberty's goaltender allowed 7 goals on 27 shots.

Winning 6-4 Saturday night, the Pirates were jostled by the hard-hitting Liberty Flames, who again seemed unable to find their game in the early going. Liberty's play was highlighted by the ejection of 5 of their players for various penalties. Pirate Freshman defenseman, Sam Duehring scored a pair of goals, with Senior Captain Cory Fleitz, Sophomores Jeremy Lang and Sean Burns, and Freshman Nick Dinardo tallying one goal each.

ECU will play NCSU at the RecZone in Raleigh Friday Feb 1 at 9:00 PM. The Pirate Hockey Club will return to the ice at Bladez on Ice in Greenville Friday, Feb.8, 9:30 PM and Saturday, Feb 9, 3:30 PM against South Carolina.

2007-08 Schedule Released

Pirates Open Season at Charlotte Shootout

8/29/07

GREENVILLE, NC - The ECU Ice Hockey Club has finalized its regular season schedule for 2007-08. This year promises to be a historic and exciting season as the Pirates take on the best teams in the South Region in their first season since their departure from the Blue Ridge Hockey Conference.

Fans will be able to enjoy plenty of hard-hitting action as a total of 10 home games are in store. The club will kick off the season with its annual Purple vs. Gold scrimmage on September 28, which will introduce fans to the new team and allow them to meet players in person. The regular season will be kicked off on the road as the Pirates will compete in the first annual Charlotte Shootout. The tournament will host ECU, Georgia Tech, George Washington University, and Appalachian State. ECU will be looking for revenge as they take on Appalachian State in the first contest since the Mountaineers defeated the Pirates in the BRHC Tournament Semi-Finals.

The Pirates then head home to open a four game homestand as they take on UNCW in a pair of games October 11-12. The first half, and arguably the entire season, is highlighted by a home game the following weekend against in-state rival NC State. The game will be played October 19, which is the night before the ECU/NC State football game, to create a "Rivalry Weekend." Also, the first 200 fans will receive free "thunderstick" noisemakers.

ECU wraps up the homestand with a Friday night game against the UNC-Charlotte 49ers October 26. The Pirates are then back on the road as they travel to Baltimore to take on Johns Hopkins University and Loyola College in back-to-back nights November 2-3. ECU will be looking to avenge two losses to Loyola as they swept the season series last year in two close games, 5-4 and 6-5 in a shootout.

The Pirates will travel to Richmond to take on the 4-time BRHC Tournament Champion University of Richmond Spiders November 16. ECU beat Richmond in the two teams' only meeting last year; a thrilling, come from behind, 4-3 home win. The following night the Pirates will face Virginia Commonwealth University to close out the first semester.

The second semester will start with the Pirates on the road for a tough weekend in Atlanta, January 11-12. ECU will take on last year's number 3-ranked Georgia Tech and perennial South Region power University of Georgia. ECU will then welcome their new "Junior Affiliate" Team Carolina Jr. B to Greenville for a two game set, January 18-19. Graduating Team Carolina players will be able to tour campus and get a better idea of what hockey and school at ECU is all about. After a tough two game home series with Liberty University, January 25-26; ECU welcomes the University of South Carolina to the Eastern Carolina region for two games February 8-9 to close out the regular season.

The club looks to improve upon last season's 16-7 overall record, which included a BRHC Regular Season Championship and an invitation to the ACHA South Regional Tournament, and welcomes the support of all fans. Be sure to show your support by wearing your official ECU Ice Hockey merchandise, which can be purchased at the game as well as at Dowdy Student Stores. New items for 2007-08 will be available starting at the first home game, so don't miss out! Tickets will be available all season at the door on the day of the game, and are $3 for students with ID and $5 for adults. To be added to the ECU Ice Hockey Booster Club E-Newsletter please contact Terry Fleitz. We hope to see you all in the fall and GO PIRATES! (click here for full schedule)

ECU Announces Team Carolina as Junior Affiliate

Pirates to Host Jr. B Team in January

6/29/07

GREENVILLE, NC - The ECU Ice Hockey Club is very proud to announce the addition of Team Carolina Jr. B as the Pirates' first ever Junior Affiliate program. The Charlotte-based club has quickly become one of the best Junior programs in the South, with over 50 alumni that have gone on to compete at the collegiate and Junior A level.

With this affiliation, Team Carolina will travel to Greenville for a two game weekend series with the Pirates January 18-19. This will be a great event as Team Carolina players will have the opportunity to tour the East Carolina University campus with current ECU players, and the coaching staff will be able to get a first-hand look at potential recruits.

ECU Ice Hockey President Brent Falcon commented by saying, "This partnership provides a great opportunity for both clubs as it enables Team Carolina athletes to move on and continue their hockey careers at the college level, while simultaneously providing ECU with a great resource for recruiting and added exposure for our club. Our hope is to make this an annual event that will result in a long-lasting relationship and tradition between our two programs."

ECU Names Director of Hockey Operations

Wayne Cox Becomes First to Assume New Role

4/28/07

GREENVILLE, NC - With the 2007-2008 season fast approaching the ECU Ice Hockey Club is proud to announce the appointing of Wayne Cox as Director of Hockey Operations. Cox becomes the first person to be named to this position as ECU looks to further strengthen the program administratively.

Wayne was named Head Coach in early 2005 and helped establish ECU Ice Hockey as one of the top programs in the South Region as he compiled an overall record of 30-14-0-1 in the club's first two seasons. Cox led the Pirates to a top 10 ranking in all but one of the 10 ranking periods in the past two years, which included an invitation to the South Regional Tournament in 2007. He also coached the Pirates to a second place finish in the BRHC Tournament in his 2006 and a BRHC Regular Season Championship in 2007.

The Nova Scotia native will step down as Head Coach, to spend more time coaching his son Logan, but will remain a critical member of the coaching staff. Cox will help to strengthen the recruiting process as well as promote the team throughout the community. His vast knowledge of the sport of hockey and dedication to ECU made him a perfect candidate, and the club is excited to have him in his new role as the Pirates look to make a serious run at the ACHA DIII National Tournament.
