ECU Closes Season With Sweep

Pirates Seal #1 Spot After Taking Two From Radford

2/19/07

GREENVILLE, NC - ECU came into Senior Weekend needing to win just one of their final two games to secure the BRHC Regular Season Championship and #1 seed going into the playoffs. They did just that with a complete domination of the Radford University Highlanders Friday night, coming away with a huge 18-4 victory. The Pirates followed that with a 10-2 win on Saturday. The coaching staff took the opportunity to sit some of the normal starters to rest in preparation for the tournament. The weekend also saw some of the lesser known Pirates getting a chance to shine. Freshman Dan Canfield had a huge weekend tallying a goal and four assists and Junior goalie Scott Duffee took a shutout into the final three minutes of the third period before finally surrendering a breakaway. Duffee would finish the game with 19 saves on 21 shots to earn his first career win.

The weekend series was also the last time that some key Seniors would lace up their skates at home. Jordan Meyers, Kevin Jarvies, Erik Brown and Pat Szwec were honored for their contributions to the team in between the first and second periods Saturday afternoon. All crucial members of the original team that earned second place honors at last year's BRHC Tournament in its inaugural season, these four young men will be missed. Meyers, vice-president and one of the founding members of the team was then joined by goalie and team president Brent Falcon as the two received the coveted Ormsbee Award for "leadership, integrity and hard work both on and off the ice." The award, named for former assistant captain and current assistant coach Mike Ormsbee, is given to the two players who best exemplify these qualities every year.

The busy weekend finally came to a close as the All-BRHC teams were announced by Commissioner Ray Campbell. Last year two Pirates were named to the All-BRHC second team; forward Mike Ormsbee and defenseman Mark Linzer. The ECU Ice Hockey Club is proud to announce that freshman defenseman Dan Duda and junior goaltender Brent Falcon were both named to the 2007 All-BRHC first team. Both players have worked hard and dedicated themselves all year on and off the ice and are incredibly deserving of this accolade. Congratulations!

The Pirates will travel to Yorktown, VA this Friday in preparation for the BRHC Tournament being hosted by Christopher Newport University. Lodging information can be found below and information regarding the tournament schedule and location can be found at the Official Site.
